Have you been wondering where the competition and struggle between Hell and Heaven is? Aside from the personal squabbles, struggles, and growth that Satan and God watch between the events, there are also the more official trials.

Whenever a trial, tournament, or whatever term you would prefer between Hell and Heaven is coming soon, this is where to look for information on it. Characters will not know about the tournaments except when the NPCs inform them officially, but helpful planning details will be contained here. This is also the place where you can check out the results of the previous trials.

Upcoming Trial Information

Currently, the first trial has yet to be announced, as Metatron and Lucifer are waiting until August 1st. God and Satan each have their own desires, and Lucifer and Metatron are their representatives, discussing until they can reach some sort of trial agreement.

The trial has become a trial of the mind. Metatron and Lucifer have left their respective headquarters temporarily to create a creature to give riddles. The creature, known as Sphinx, will be a temporary NPC controlled by the moderator. The trial is going to be a trial of riddles, puzzles and cryptograms. Each chosen representative from Niflheim and Asgard will receive one puzzle to solve. This puzzle will have three parts - figuring out what the puzzle itself says or is asking, figuring out the answer to the puzzle, and retrieving the answer (which may or may not be a difficult quest.)

Current Trial

Important Dates

  • Friday, August 1st - An official trial 'newsletter' of sorts will be sent to the door of every single character in the game, featuring a list of the representatives for each side and detailing the next step of the trial.
  • Friday, August 15th - All representatives are summoned (as described in the 'newsletter') to a unique place in the realm where a ceremony will be held. After the initial parts of the ceremony are finished, characters will be summoned one by one to receive their riddle in private (in a second thread.) During these moments, the representatives not with Sphinx may interact with each other.
  • Sunday, September 14th - The day where the representatives are to deliver their solved riddle and the answer to Sphinx. From August 15th to September 14th, characters can try to figure things out and go on adventures to find whatever it is they have to retrieve, but on September 14th they will be accountable for delivering the requested item.

Different Types of Trials

The different types of trials will be elaborated upon as different trials pop up.

Keep in mind that the trials in Chaos Unraveled aren't a true contest but another way to have fun with plot and character interaction.

Trials of the Mind

Riddle Trials
  • Story Information
Riddle trials, as per the first trial ever introduced into CU, are about solving puzzles and last about a month. Characters are selected to represent their team and be responsible for the solution to a puzzle they receive. They receive the puzzle at a ceremony with Lucifer, Metatron and Sphinx (a Trial-focused NPC) that officially begins the trial of the mind. Upon receiving the puzzles they can do what they want and attempt to solve their respective puzzles as best they can, with the occasional aid of teammates.

Characters that were not representatives could help representatives with their puzzles - but not everyone would necessarily solve the puzzle they receive. No one character should solve everyone's puzzles for them either - try to let everyone have an opportunity to have a character help in some way, if they want to.

Typically the puzzles have three parts. First, the riddle is in some sort of code, so one has to figure out what the riddle is saying. Then, one has to solve the riddle to figure out what they need to do and bring back to Sphinx. After that, it's all about the quest of finding what the riddle wants and bringing it to Sphinx on the last day of the trial!

  • Other Information
The answers to the puzzles are not given out immediately, because actual players might want to have fun trying to solve the puzzles on their own outside of the game or to add some authenticity behind how their character(s) solve a puzzle. Two or three weeks into the trial, the answers will be publicly shared. Before that, the moderator will expect players to converse with her in comments or via email about their riddles and the actual answers, if they needed to know quickly.

When a character finally correctly figures out the second part of the puzzle (what the puzzle actually is asking of the character), players should email the mod so that extra details about the quest portion of the puzzles can be shared. Why the request that people alert the mod to this? This is because it's the best way she could think of to add in an interesting quest portion into the trial without necessarily giving away the answers.
