The Communication Systems
Unlike most games, the first-person journal entries are not necessarily online journals. Even so, online journals are not used like typical journals, they're communication devices people use to reach out to others. Within Chaos Unraveled, Lucifer and Metatron designed communication systems that are magically based. Each did so to help their side, but the systems ended up being quite similar and people from either side could communicate with the other.
The Communication System within the game is perceived differently to each character, depending on his or her perception of the world. For more modern folks who would understand it, they are likely to perceive it as a messaging board or online journal system. For others, it could be anything else. It may be a book that writes itself in the different handwritings of each character, or a high tech communication device that transmits and records voices.
Though it is technically not a journal for each character, a [private] entry is considered to be just for the character who made it. Other characters cannot read something marked [private]. Unlike actually making the entry private, this allows other players (also known as muns, I believe, though to this day I know not what that means) to read what is contained therein and enjoy learning what a character thinks, even if their characters might never learn this information.
One can be even more creative with the communication system, though! It is also possible to write a letter and wrap it up for safekeeping under a character's pillow and mark it [Private//Letter] or something to note that it is not the usual private entry. The mod encourages a description in parentheses or brackets within the entry so people can understand what was done. Another creative way to use the system would be, for example, if Lucifer left an 'orb' for someone. When the person went into their room, the orb would activate and the character would hear Lucifer's message.
Basically when a character writes something or communicates in any way in first person that isn't direction in front of someone, the communication system is used somehow.
Current System Perceptions
Because there are so many ways to perceive the communication system, here is a list of the different descriptions of how many ways there currently are to perceive the system.
Literal Journal Versions
Alice perceives the system as a book - specifically, her 'journal' actually appears to be a rather thick journal. What she writes inside of it (unless marked private of course) is shared with the others and converted into whatever form their 'journal' takes instead. Alice receives messages typically as notes within the journal in other people's handwriting.
Online Journal
Many characters, most of the ones from modern earth in fact, actually perceive the system as a series of online journals.
Crystal Ball
Carrion does use the modern technology in his world to serve his purpose, but he is much more oriented towards magick and magickal objects. Instead of a book or a computer, Lucifer has given Carrion an obsidian crystal ball which displays communications with white letters on the surface of the orb (or sometimes plays music/audio). He replies by dictating messages to the orb and can scroll through entries that are public. He can also store notes and information on this device for safe-keeping, a feature he has found more useful than writing things down on paper.
Special Communications
On occasion, there are notable 'special' uses of the system.
The only truly notable special uses are how characters have occasionally left letters on Niflheim's or Asgard's doorstep, one character wrote a letter and kept it in their room as a sentimental object, and Lucifer and Metatron have both been known to use little voice-recording and -transmitting orbs to communicate with others on occasion. With Lucifer, they took the form of black orbs. With Metatron, the orbs were a beautiful, deep royal blue with tiny little fluttering wings.
