Lina InverseBasics

Where she comes from: Slayers (Anime)
Birthday (if known): In the anime, it's not stated. Unofficially, we'll go with August 2nd.
Age: 17
Species: Human, sorceress
Sexual Orientation: For the most part she seems heterosexual, but the "right" girl could probably alter this a little.
Occupation: Sorceress, Sorceress Supreme (self-titled), Bandit Killer, The Enemy of All Who Live, The Dragon Spooker...
Reputation: In her world, Lina Inverse is infamous and humans and dragons alike fear her chaotic nature. Though she saves the world numerous times, she is innately selfish, capricious and carelessly destructive. Even her friends, who know there is more to her than that, often have to find some way to stop her from causing more trouble in a bad situation - something they are not always successful at.

In Chaos Unraveled, people tend to view her as an odd young woman who eats way too much and is pretty irresponsible, though sometimes she's said things that have oddly pleased others. She's also known to be absolutely horrible at drawing horses, though she's excellent at anything magic-related from her world.

Her World

History and Legend

Lina Inverse comes from a world where magic is the normal way of things. Her world was created in a similar style to what you would expect of a Dungeons & Dragons world, heavily lacking in technology except where it might relate to magic.

There is a "godly" race and a "demonic" race within her world. The "godly" race is the known in Japanese as the Shinzoku, simply called the Dragon Gods in the Slayers universe. The Dragon Gods are Ceipheed and the four Dragon Lords he split into, and Dragons pretty much worship them - though even Dragons are much more powerful than humans. The "demonic" race cannot be translated into English well. The true translation of Mazoku is "race of evil", and calling them demons doesn't quite cover the race of the Mazoku. In the end, most fans of Slayers refer to the Mazoku as...Mazoku, to preserve the uniqueness of the race while keeping the Dragon race name intact. The supreme Dragon is the Red Dragon God "Flare Dragon" Ceiphied while the supreme Mazoku is the Dark Lord "Ruby-Eye" Shabranigdo. These two races are constantly fighting each other. Supposedly, if the Dragons win peace will come. If the Mazoku win, they will destroy the world and return it to chaos.

Ceipheed and Shabranigdo fought for ages until finally, Ceipheed managed to split Shabranigdo into seven pieces, preventing him from coming back to life. To make it even more difficult, each piece was sealed in a human soul. As humans are reincarnated in the Slayers universe, this would wear down Shabranigdo's power and, in theory, eventually destroy him. Ceipheed was so exhausted by this that he had to return to the Sea of Chaos, leaving only four parts of himself and his soul behind.

The four parts of Ceipheed became the Aqualord Ragradia (sometimes called the Water Dragon King), Flarelord Vrabazard, Airlord Valwin, and Earthlord Rangort.

Peace did not last.

About a thousand years before Lina Inverse was born, the War of the Monster's Fall occured. It is one of the greatest conflicts in the Slayers universe ever mentioned. The war was started by one of the five Mazoku Lords, Hellmaster Phibrizo. He wanted to release one of the pieces of Shabranigdo and destroy the Aqualord. To cut a long story short, Hellmaster Phibrizo managed to surround a section of the world in a Mazoku Barrier, sealing all those within it and preventing humans from traveling past the walls. A powerful, infamous sorcerer known as Lei Magnus held one of the pieces of Shabranigdo and it was released due to the Hellmaster's attempts, but the Aqualord managed to seal Lei Magnus and the piece of Shabranigdo within a block of magical ice in the north. The Aqualord "won" against Shabranigdo and his forces, but she won at a terrible cost. She died, but part of her remained: her nearly endless knowledge took the form of the Claire Bible, and the remaining thoughts of herself protect the Claire Bible as an old, tiny, grandmotherly woman known as Auntie Aqua.

The effects of the war brought monsters into the world, such as trolls, and inner turmoil between the Dragons, who went so far as to massacre the Ancient Dragons, one of the Dragon races.

Within the Mazoku Barrier, magic evolved and humans became adept at using black, shamanistic and white spells. Outside of the Mazoku Barrier, magic never takes as strong a hold and technology (though still in a fantastical Middle Age, not-very-modern-at-all sense) is turned to instead.

Magic

Magic has four forms: black, white, shamanistic and holy. The fourth form, holy (sometimes called divine instead), was lost to humans within the Mazoku Barrier as it prevented such magic from being cast. Holy magic is the true opposite of black magic in that it draws upon the power of Ceipheed and his lords.

In black magic, there are spells that draw power from a specific being (Dragon Slave), spells that draw on Mazoku forces, curses, and summoning spells. The most powerful black magic spells are the spells that draw power from a specific being. However, when a Mazoku who is attached to the spell is destroyed, the spell fails to work from then on.

White magic draws upon the caster's own life force. White magic is devoted to healing and defense. The strongest person in white magic that Lina knows of is Sylphiel Nels Rada, a shrine maiden who is absolutely in love with her blonde travelling companion, Gourry Gabriev. Sylphiel proved capable of erecting defense spells that stood strong against incredibly powerful attacks.

Shamanistic magic draws upon the energy of the natural world around the caster, or from the astral plane. The strongest spell in astral magic is the Ra Tilt, which is extremely powerful against spiritual beings (namely Mazoku) and equal in power to a Dragon Slave.

There is a slightly less known fifth form of magic, technically. It isn't named and there are only two known spells of this kind. Lina Inverse invented one herself, not fully knowing the true source of the power she was drawing it from. The second, Lina learned about from a manuscript of the Claire Bible. The first is the Giga Slave, the second is the Ragna Blade. To explain the immense power this fifth form requires for a human, information about the Dragon Slave must be shared. The Dragon Slave is said to be possible to cast only if the human holds the most magical capacity a human being can hold. A Giga Slave is even more immensely powerful (the Ragna Blade is also), but it is extremely dangerous to use. You see, the Slayers world (and three others) was born from a Sea of Chaos, and this Creator is actually the Lord of Nightmares. The Lord of Nightmares essentially tore pieces of herself away to create the worlds and everything within them, and now she is a lonely existence constantly desiring to become whole again. In casting the Giga Slave, Lina draws the Lord of Nightmares within herself, and a split second break in concentration or loss of control over the spell could result in the Lord of Nightmares taking control of her body. With Lina as a vessel, the Lord of Nightmares would then proceed to destroy everything so that she could become whole again. Both the Giga Slave and the Ragna Blade are incredibly destructive, but the Giga Slave is far too dangerous to be used.

Though Lina has to cast the Giga Slave more than once in the Slayers anime, she only uses it willingly the first time she is shown using it. Technically, that is the second time she casts the Giga Slave as she first tested it out on a body of water. After using it on Shabranigdo and learning the truth of the Giga Slave from Sylphiel, she avoids using it at almost any cost.

Personal Background

Lina actually comes from a rural country within her world, known as Zephilia. Her father is an ex-mercenary, her mother an ex-sorceress, and her older sister Luna Inverse is a Knight of Ceipheed (an immensely powerful individual with a piece of Ceipheed's power) who works part-time as a waitress. When Lina was much younger and wanted to make money, she basically sold projections of Luna bathing. Luna ended up punishing her and Lina has been terrified of her since. It seems that while Lina is utterly afraid of her sister, her sister's immense powers made Lina the person she is today. Lina gained an inferiority complex (demonstrated constantly by her projection of an immensely large ego to hide it, despite her excellence) and became utterly obsessed with magic.

By the age of fourteen she was already famous (mostly in ways she didn't want - see: Dragon Spooker, The Enemy of All Who Live.) The first season of Slayers takes place when Lina is fifteen. NEXT takes place while she is sixteen. During TRY she is seventeen, which is why she's seventeen coming into Chaos Unraveled. She is also a member of a sorcery guild - one which bestows color names to powerful magic users. Lina received a color title herself, but she tries not to advertise this. It isn't because she doesn't want the glory, it's because the title utterly destroys one's pride. Lina's title is a simple one - Lina the Pink. Pink!
