Henry TownshendThis is a featured page

What world they came from: Silent Hill 4: The Room
Birthday (if known): June 23, 1978
Age: 26
Species: Human
Occupation: Freelance Photographer

Appearance: Henry's a remarkably average man. He's about 5'11, with short brown hair, blue eyes, and a permanent five o'clock shadow. His features are square and strong, but not remarkably prominent. He's relatively well built - nothing special, but not underweight or out of shape. He's something of an every-man, really.

Special abilities/talents: Henry's a talented photographer, and extremely observant. He has an eye for architecture, a knack at fixing up old cars, and is a decent artist. He's also extremely empathic - able to empathize with others feelings and emotions. He's very good at figuring people out, and seeing things for what they really are, in a sense. He was chosen as the Receiver of Wisdom for a reason, after all.

Quirks: Henry's a quiet sort. He tends to not talk too much, and when he does, speaks in short sentences with few interjections. He also tends to be soft spoken and polite - the strongest curses we hear out of him are 'hell' and 'damn'. A potty-mouth he is not. ;) He takes photographs of buildings wherever he goes. He also has a habit of fidgeting with whatever happens to be in his hands - in the games, if left idle, he'll perform a variety of actions with whatever happens to be in his hand at the moment.

Personality: Henry is described as 'a quiet soul, shy, extremely stoic and introverted'. Which sums him up superficially quite well. He is a man of few words and many thoughts. He's awkward in social interactions, clearly capable of connecting with and making friends with others, but not smooth or suave or skilled with conversation. He has great difficulty explaining things well - a canon example is when he attempts to explain the Nightmare World and how he came to be there to Eileen. He manages 'There was this hole... I saw people getting killed... weird worlds... I saw you get attacked...'. He prefers his own company most of the time, and the company of books and photographs. Photography is his passion, above all things. He has an eye for composition and natural beauty that goes beyond the simple technical. He often speaks of feeling drawn to or being attracted by buildings and natural formations, as though he's compelled to photograph them and capture that one moment in time.

He's a calm man, relatively well composed under crisis. Despite seeing horrific things and violent murders committed in front of his eyes, Henry remains calm and attempts to help and offer comfort, rather than panicking. On that note, he is a man who is filled with compassion for others, though he rarely expresses it. He tends to keep his emotions under wraps, and only extreme situations bring them out. For the most part he's emotionally subdued - quietly happy, quietly sad, and extremely slow to anger. He's remarkably adaptable, sudden changes in his life just accepted and rolled with, and doesn't have much attachment to physical things.

His reserved nature is a hindrance, and can lead to the assumption that he's strange, aloof, and even eccentric. He doesn't seem to care much what other people think of him, however.

Here in Asgard, he's come out of his shell some, but still tends to keep a great deal to himself and within his own mind.

Sexual orientation: Henry is predominantly heterosexual. He's open minded and non-judgmental, but he's attracted to women. In canon, his demeanor and actions regarding women differs greatly from men - women he protects, feels for, and is more emotionally attached to. While he wouldn't dismiss the idea out of hand if he ended up - through some bizarre twist - with the opportunity to be with another man, it would take a great deal for him to accept the idea. There would have to be an extremely deep attachment and connection he couldn't find anywhere else. And even then, it wouldn't be about biological sex, but about the person.

Reputation: For the most part, people know Henry by his name and face. He's not thought highly of or lowly of. His landlord knows him as a quiet, introverted photographer who doesn't cause trouble and pays his rent on time. In Asgard, he's gained a reputation of being a level headed, intelligent man who's looked to for support. He's still not sure how this happened.

Background Information: Henry comes from the town of Ashfield, a six hour drive from the once-popular tourist town of Silent Hill. His life was normal for the most part. He visited Silent Hill often as a child and a young man, first on family vacations and then on his own to photograph the town. He graduated from community college with a degree in photography and went about making his living off of selling his work. After a few years he moved into South Ashfield Heights, apartment 302. He never really settled into it, though. He kept the furniture that had been left there by a previous tenant, bringing only his own books and photographs. Along with those, his landlord - seeing Henry's interest in both Silent Hill and photographs - gave him a picture of a church in the town.

for two years Henry lived quietly in the apartment, venturing out for errands and taking pictures, and never really getting to know any of his neighbors. He was friendly enough with Eileen Galvin, the pretty girl next door, but was never able to say more than a few words to her when they passed in the hall.

Then, suddenly, he woke up one day and couldn't leave his apartment. The windows were stuck and locked by an invisible force, chains had been locked across his door from the inside, and no one outside could hear him. For five days Henry tried to break out or get someone's attention, but to no avail. On the fifth night, he had a bizarre nightmare and woke up to find a red slip of paper under his door and a mysterious hole in his bathroom wall.

Having no other choice, Henry climbed through the hole, hoping for escape. What he found instead was a nightmare of epic proportions. He finds himself in a grotesque mockery of a nearby subway station, meets a provocative woman named Cynthia, and fights horrific monsters. He finds various holes all over, and is able to use them to travel back and forth between the nightmare realm and his own apartment. He attempts to help Cynthia escape, but unfortunately they're separated and when he finds her it's too late. she's been attacked and lays dying, the numbers 16121 carved on her chest. Henry stays with her, holding her, and assuring her it's all a dream.

This becomes Henry's reality. Traveling through the hole in his bathroom to places which resembled twisted versions of real life places, meeting others who are trapped and being unable to save them. Eventually he learns he is in a nightmare world created by a serial killer, Walter Sullivan. Walter was once human, an orphan who believed that the apartment room now rented by Henry was his mother. As he grew up in Silent Hill, cared for by one of the religious cults in the town, his psychic abilities grew. He became twisted, killed ten people before he was caught, and suicided in jail, raving madly.

Now Walter's spirit lives on, thanks to the Ritual of Holy Assumption, and seeks to complete the 21 Sacraments he started in live. Henry is Sacrement 21, the Receiver of Wisdom, chosen to bear witness to the other sacraments and Walter's own twisted mind. He returns again and again to his apartment, the only safe place in his world. And his only connection to the real world. Through his peephole he can see neighbors and his landlord, and through a true peephole in his living room he can see into Eileen's room. He watches her often, desperate for any sort of connection with a living, breathing human being.

After four deaths, Henry returns to his apartment to find a bloody message on the wall across from his door. 'Better Check on Your Neighbor'. Eileen looks fine, and Henry returns through the hole. He finds himself now in a twisted version of his own apartment building. It's there he witnesses Eileen's attack - she is beaten and bloody, the numbers 20121 carved into her back. but the stange child that Henry now knows to be an aspect of Walter Sullivan has saved her. Henry wakes up in his apartment to news of Eileen's attack on the radio.

He is able to find her in a nightmare version of the hospital, and promises he'll protect her and take her out of there. But Eileen can't see the holes Henry uses to travel between worlds. And now even his own apartment isn't safe. Once more he travels to the places he saw before, different this time. Each one is accessed through a door at the bottom of a spiral staircase that descends ever lower.

They are traveling through Walter's mind, down to the very depths of him. Henry does his best to protect Eileen, but as they go deeper, she begins to act oddly. She's being possessed by Walter, and Henry can do nothing to help her save try and keep her from physical harm. Eventually they reach the bottom and Henry learns the truth. What he is, how to destroy Walter, and what will happen if they don't. And he finally finds the keys to his own liberation - in the preserved corpse of Walter Sullivan, walled up inside his own apartment.

Eventually he makes his way, after becoming separated from Eileen who claims to wish to help Walter, to where Walter's true form resides. Eileen is there as well, walking slowly towards a strange machine of death. Henry defeats Walter's true form, bringing his spectral adult form into the flesh, and is able to kill him moments before Eileen walks to her death. Walter's death ends the nightmare, the deaths, and the strange hauntings inside room 302....

Relationships: He is currently dating Eileen Galvin, considers Will Graham to be his best friend, and feels like he's grown close to Alessa and Blythe. He gets along pretty well with everyone in Asgard, though, and doesn't actively dislike anyone - though a few of his teammates frustrate him now and again.

Current Plots: Currently, Henry is not involved in any particular plots.
